Desk-based assessments
Home

Desk-based assessments (DBAs) are often required to determine the likely location, size, extent, nature, condition and significance of any potential archaeological resource. The uncertainty of the presence of archaeological features is a problem commonly facing developers, which is why we are commonly requested to undertake a DBA before a site is purchased and before planning permission has been granted.

Chiltern Archaeology can provide this service - quickly, efficiently and confidentially. The cost depends on the size of the project area and the scope of the information required, but the cost would start at £350 for a small site in a local area. The following elements would be negotiated as potentially part of the work:

Initial meeting/briefing with client to assess requirements
A full data survey and collation using all map, photographic, and document sources available and appropriate (NMR, HER. SM & listed buildings register, Local Authority Brief, on-line databases, etc)
Walkover survey of the site resulting in collation of the on-site documentation with photographs and annotated plans
Interim liaison with client if problems arise
Data evaluation and final report (6 bound copies plus electronic copy)
Advice and recommendations, if required

1767 manorial map for Downley Parish

Compare to the Manorial map of 1698: map regressions from the modern day OS yield much information about the development and past history of an area. The 1698 tithe map and list are below.

Geological maps lay the foundation.

We can investigate any map: historical, manorial, OS, soil, hyrological, or geological and relate it directly to the interpretation of the site.
