Chiltern Archaeology offers two kinds of geophysical survey:

Resistivity
Magnetic susceptibility

Resistivity

Our fast and experienced team can make this a good option for geophysical survey. The meter detects resistance to an electrical current sent into the ground during the survey.

This technique presents good results for many archaeological features such as ditches, masonry, pits, etc. It will not work well on waterlogged ground or in drought conditions or near large trees in summer.

We can work to any size grid required and to the required resolution and methods. The cost for this survey is economical at £250 a day which includes the later downloading and basic processing of the data in Geoplot. One day will be sufficient to cover 2,400 square meters.

Magnetic susceptibility

Widely used in landscape studies or to detect habitation layers in archaeological excavations, this technique is useful to cover large areas fairly quickly. As this technique does not require the presence of particular features such as ditches or pits to detect human occupation it can be very useful in this respect and it can detect areas missed by the other techniques.

It is useful for detecting the limits of occupation, but has poor depth penetration, so it is most useful for features close to the surface. Magnetic susceptibility surveys are around £200 per day, but this will depend on the level of data processing and presentation required.
