Horse Leys field started end May and this is an even larger field than down at Thames field at Mill End. Again we have extreme archaeology, but this time due to the cow dodging! Cows we found are not only inquisitive but they like some fun too - like knocking down your ranging poles and licking your tapes. Starting the survey at the south end of the field. No cows in the morning.
The cows appear at 2 pm for milking and then come out to play with us!
They trample the grid in a friendly kind of way, and leave big presents for us - I hope not a statement on our survey skills!
..... and sometimes they entertain us with a little pole dancing!
Resi surveys are never boring when the terrible trio get together (Roger, John and Alfred).
The metal detecting team in action in Horse Leys field. Note that many areas in the Hambleden Valley are scheduled by English Heritage. This means that no detecting or digging on these areas is allowed. We were very careful to only detect on the non-scheduled areas.
It is so exciting to find something Roman, even if it is only a Roman nail or two! It means there were structures here requiring nails - and so we searched on.
Did I do something to upset you all? Here is Jill sent into the stream and left there holding the tape!
