Chiltern Archaeology Professional Training Course:

Sediments, soils and interpreting environments

A two-day geoarchaeology course

2 day course 5th & 6th September 2012

Venue: Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire

Cost: £220 for the 2-day course

This course is for archaeologists who need to know the geological background to sediments and how to interpret them. The course focuses on the identification of different types of sediment and soils, how they form and what this tells us about the environment that produced them.

It is a hands-on course with many specimens and case studies presented during the classroom-based sessions on Day 1. The second day starts with a class-based introduction to soils, soil profiles and interpretation. The first 6 registrations can have their own soil sites report provided by us. Participants can send the name of their field site, including County name and a grid reference from which I can prepare a soil site report for them, which can amount to 45 pages of information on their site. The field trip for the afternoon will concentrate on interpreting a site nearby in Buckinghamshire.

There is a large handout and numerous helpful tips and examples. The trainer is Dr Jill Eyers, a geologist and Director of Chiltern Archaeology.
